Protecting Your Family in the Modern Age

April 16, 2025

When thinking about how to best protect your family members, things like physical and mental safety come into mind, but how well are you ensuring their online safety is also being protected? Many families are realizing the increased importance, especially when it comes to our older generations, of educating our family and friends of healthy online practices.

Here are a few tips to help promote safe online practices:

  • Create a Password Book. Counter to what is typically recommended, for older generations in particular, the use of a password manager can be yet another hurdle for your relatives to keep track of. A physical book can help you keep your family member’s information in one spot and easy to update with the latest password.
  • Continue to Stress the Importance of “Common Sense” Tactics to Live By. There are some true and tried rules when it comes to protecting your online identity and accounts that are worth reminding your older relatives of. For instance, a legitimate company or banking institution will never ask for their password or bank account number on the phone or by email.
  • Sign Your Relatives up for Bank Alerts. By helping your relatives sign up for bank alerts, you, and your relatives, can be alerted if any unusual activity occurs or is flagged. By becoming immediately aware of potential unauthorized activity, it can potentially save your family members from large withdrawals and account closures by a scammer.

By continuing to raise awareness to improve online habits, you can better ensure you, and your family and friends, stay safe by minimizing risk.
